Variable Definition
Lifetime cigarette use (any amount). Respondents are classified as never, former or current smokers (the number of cigarettes is not used). Smoking status is classified as never smokers, former smokers, and current smokers. A survey participant is classified as never smoker if they report never smoking any cigarettes. Those who have used cigarettes before, but do not currently smoke are considered former smokers. Current smokers are those who have reported smoking cigarettes in their lifetime and are current cigarette smokers.
